This Year's Most Ridiculous Emmy Submissions

Sorry, guys, you're not exactly Emmy material
The 2011 Emmy nomination announcements are still a month away, but since the list of those who submitted themselves for consideration in the acting categories has been released, we thought we'd check out this year's playing field. Some of it is great, if unlikely, but some of it is incredibly laughable. Let's take a look at some of the funniest and saddest submissions, shall we? (And yes, we know these submissions often have more to do with stroking talent egos than with anybody's belief in their chances of being nominated, but that doesn't mean it's not hilarious to see people like Martin Henderson and Chace Crawford throwing their names in the ring against Steve Buscemi and Jon Hamm.)
The Longest, Most Laughable Longshots in the Bunch
  • • Chace Crawford, "Gossip Girl," submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Despite not being a lead, nor the show being an award-worthy drama.
  • • Robbie Jones, "Hellcats," submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. See above, then multiply by a thousand.
  • • Jason Ritter, "The Event," submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He was the captain of the Titanic, if you will. With bad facial hair to boot.
  • • Natalie Zea, "Justified," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Just because the show is outstanding doesn't mean you are.
  • • Rutina Wesley, "True Blood," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. It's not Outstanding Supporting Over-Actress, last time we checked.

Apparently, by Some Interpretations, Having Abs Counts as "Outstanding Acting"
  • • Aly Michalka, "Hellcats," submitted for Outstanding Lead Actress in a "Drama" Series.
  • • Ryan Kwanten, "True Blood," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
  • • Gilles Marini, "Brothers and Sisters," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Who Cares If I'm the Worst Actress on a Bad, Canceled Show? I'm Going for It Anyway!
  • • Valerie Cruz, "Off the Map," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

A Very Popular Tactic: Maybe If We Submit Every Actor Who Has Ever Appeared on Our Emmy-Unworthy Show, We'll Confuse the Academy and Somebody Will Miraculously Get Nominated
  • • "Glory Daze," 11 acting category submissions.
  • • "Rizzoli & Isles," 8 acting category submissions.
  • • "The Event," 11 acting category submissions.
  • • "The Cape," 8 acting category submissions.
  • • "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," 8 acting category submissions.
  • • "Psych," 10 acting category submissions.
  • • "Camelot," 9 acting category submissions.
  • • "Army Wives," 10 acting category submissions.
  • • "Off the Map," 8 acting category submissions.
  • • "Outsourced," 9 acting category submissions.
  • • "Rules of Engagement," 8 acting category submissions.
  • • "Royal Pains," 11 acting category submissions.
  • • "White Collar," 15 acting category submissions.

Beautiful Line Delivery, Very Nuanced
  • • Jason Momoa, "Game of Thrones," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
You're Still on That Show? Who Knew?
  • • Katrina Bowden (Cerie), "30 Rock," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Most Awesomely Flagrant Waste of a Submission Fee
  • • Lake Bell, "Childrens Hospital," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
The "Hey, It's Worth a Try" Strategy
  • • Elizabeth Mitchell, "V," submitted for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Just Sad
  • • Joey Lawrence, "Melissa & Joey," submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
  • • Hayley Hasselhoff, "Huge," submitted for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
  • • Scott Patterson, "The Event," submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Oh, Luke!

Muhammad Ali’s ‘greatest’ gift to Dirk Nowitzki

Muhammad Ali’s ‘greatest’ gift to Dirk Nowitzki

Former heavyweight champion and legendary sports icon Muhammad Ali didn't waste any time in letting the most recent NBA Finals MVP know exactly how he feels. According to Dirk Nowitzki(notes) -- last month's main man as the Dallas Mavericks won it all -- Ali sent him a glove after Dallas' Finals win with an inscription that read "You are the greatest."
Minutes before he strode onto a balcony to greet his fans and followers in his hometown of Wurzburg, Germany, Dirk took the time to answer several pointed questions for Spiegel, Germany's most famous and prominent weekly magazine. And while we should probably be wary of the translation inherent in back and forth sessions like these (there are some questions and answers that scan a little dodgy once translated to English), the story behind the Ali sustains.
Here's the passage from Spiegel:
SPIEGEL: Did any German politicians call to congratulate you?
Nowitzki: I think that (German Chancellor) Angela Merkel called my adviser. I'm not totally sure. But do you know what made me the happiest?
SPIEGEL: What?
Nowitzki: Muhammad Ali sent me a package.
SPIEGEL: What was in it?
Nowitzki: A boxing glove with the inscription: "You are the greatest." Please don't ask me immediately about the political meaning of the gift. I was simply happy and sent Ali a golden basketball with a similar inscription.
Pretty sweet deal, Muhammad Ali. A boxing glove with a fawning note, traded for a basketball made of gold?
Muhammad Ali’s ‘greatest’ gift to Dirk NowitzkiRacket jokes aside, you have to wonder if Ali and his family are in the habit of sending these sorts of gifts to either every NBA Finals MVP, every obvious franchise player behind the best teams of the NBA season, or even the top players on every championship team that rolls down the baseball/football/basketball pike a few times a year.
Even if he's sending these out four or five times in a calendar year, this is clearly a very cool move by Ali. How breathtaking -- literally breathtaking -- would that be to open up?
And if that gift was one of a kind, for at least the recent times? You're a lucky dude, Dirk Nowitzki.
You're also pretty well deserving. Just don't Wurzburg it up too much, strap on the gloves, and decide to take anyone on that dares make fun of Jose Juan Barea's height. We need those shooting wrists intact when the next NBA season starts, sometime in 2014.

Justin Bieber's Vanity Fair Cover Bombed at the Newsstand

At the start of 2011, magazine sales figures proved putting Lady Gaga on the cover of your magazine is a sure-fire way to guarantee blockbuster sales, while featuring Taylor Swift front and center is an almost certain bust. Now that numbers from the February 2011 issue of Vanity Fair starring Justin Bieber are in, we know how the 17-year-old heartthrob ranks amongst pop-star cover models and it is not good -- in fact, for Vanity Fair, the numbers are nearly horrifying. Bieber's issue is going to have the dubious distinction of being the Conde Nast monthly's worst-selling in 12 years.
According to Women's Wear Daily, who cites results from the Audit Bureau of Circulations' Rapid Report (preliminary newsstand sales figures reported by magazines but not yet confirmed by the Bureau), Bieber's VF issue sold 246,000 copies, 28 percent below the magazine's average of 342,000 for the first half of the year. Since editor Graydon Carter took over the magazine in 1992, only two other covers have performed this poorly -- a 1999 Will Smith issue and a 1993 Harrison Ford one.
More shockingly, the Vanity Fair bomb actually wasn't an anomaly. According to WWD, Bieber also appeared on an October 2010 Teen Vogue cover that sold 121,054 issues, 12 percent below the magazine's 2010 average. His April 2010 People cover sold 961,762 copies, 25 percent below the weekly's average, making it the publication's third-worst seller of the year.
Bummed about Bieber? Restore your faith in humanity by following The Amplifier on Twitter!
"Worst" and "seller" and not words commonly found in stories about megastar Bieber, who has the highest-grossing concert film in U.S. history and the fourth-best-selling album of 2010 with 2.3 million copies. So what's the blame for the singer's lack of traction at the newsstand?
The answers vary by the publication: Vanity Fair isn't geared toward the teens and tweens who usually snatch up every piece of Bieber memorabilia. The other stories featured on the February 2011 cover include the words "Warren Buffett," "Wikigate," and "The Kennedy Inauguration" -- not exactly kiddy catnip. Scans of the issue likely hit the web as soon as the first Belieber got his or her hands on it, proving that the story itself wasn't actually all that revealing. Bieber talked about loving Michael Jackson and being a regular kid -- the kind of uncontroversial topics he usually tackles.
The Teen Vogue story was likewise not filled with earth-shattering gossip, and the People cover got more attention for its goofy photo than anything else. Bieber's most talked-about magazine cover in recent memory is certainly Rolling Stone's February 2011 profile in which writer Vanessa Grigoriadis tried to quiz the singer on topics like abortion and politics. Sales figures for the Rolling Stone issue have not yet been reported.
In general, Bieber keeps his fans updated on his everyday doings via Twitter, so unless a magazine story includes extra sexy photos or the promise of never-before-heard tales, Justin's followers just don't need to shell out the extra cash. And while he's still a bona fide superstar, there have been a few chinks in Bieber's usually pristine armor recently -- in May he was pelted with eggs while performing in Australia and last month he had a particularly icy cameo on David Letterman's show.
For the record, Lady Gaga is still pretty darn good at selling magazines. Per AdWeek, Vogue's March Lady Gaga cover sold an estimated 445,000, well above the magazine's average of 370,000 for the first five months of 2011. The secret to her newsstand success? Always being ready with a wacky quote and an even wackier outfit.
